Protect power loom sector: CPI

January 21, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:35 am IST - TIRUCHENGODE:

The Communist Party of India (CPI) has said that the steep raise in the power tariff had badly hit the power loom units functioning in Tiruchengode, and its surrounding areas. The State Government should take steps to extend concession in power tariff, and regulate the provision of power subsidy in the interest of livelihood of the large number of workforce employed in these units.

Because of the raise in power tariff, many small industrial and power loom units were being closed down. Hundreds of workers employed in the power loom units were facing the threat of going jobless if this trend continued. The government should protect the power loom units, said a resolution adopted at the Tiruchengode town conference of the CPI held here recently.

The area of Tiruchengode Municipality has widened and there has been steep increase in the population. The municipality accounted for only 172 sanitary workers which was not adequate enough to serve the 354 streets spread over in 33 wards. The municipality should appoint more number of sanitary workers to keep the town neat and tidy.

A large number of devotees from across the State visit the Arulmigu Kailasanathar Temple in the town round the year. The roads surrounding the temple were in a very bad shape causing much hardship to the devotees. The municipality should take steps for re-laying the roads on its own, without calling for tenders, another resolution said.

The party expressed concern at the delay in the execution of the circular road laying work. This lead to traffic congestion in the town, particularly during the peak hours. Till the circular road work was completed, the police should regulate traffic in the town from 7am to 9am and from 4pm to 6pm.

A large number of workers employed in the lorry workshops, rig units, and body building units in Tiruchengode town, come here from other parts of the district. Adequate pay and use toilets and bathrooms should be constructed in the town for their benefit.

The municipality should take steps for repairing the drainage in the bus stand, construct a marriage hall to enable the poor to conduct marriages without spending much, construct compound wall for the shandy on Tiruchengode — Pallipalayam road. The meeting urged the government to increase the strength of doctors and nurses in the Government Hospital.

S. Manivel, Namakkal district secretary of the CPI, inaugurated the conference.
