Policemen stress wearing helmets, students caution against use of drugs

RTO organises a rally creating awareness of helmet wearing

Police and Regional Transport Office (RTO) personnel took out helmet awareness rally and the Narcotics Intelligence Bureau (NIB) and Indian Red Cross Society, the rally on International day against drug abuse and illicit trafficking on Friday at the district headquarters here on Friday.

About 50 police men, including those drawn from the traffic police took out a motorcycle rally, creating awareness on the need for wearing helmet. The rally was organised by the police after the Madras High Court made helmet wearing compulsory for two-wheeler riders and pillion riders from July 1.

After Assistant Superintendent of Police Sugana Singh flagged off the rally in the presence of Deputy Superintendent of Police R Annamalai Azhwar and Inspector of Police (Traffic) Muthuramalingam near the Armed Reserved police grounds, the motorists rode through the town and returned back.

The RTO organised a separate rally on Friday evening, creating awareness of helmet wearing. Regional Transport Officer B Sheik Mohamed flagged off the rally in the present of DSP Ashwar. Motor Vehicle Inspectors Saravana Kumar, Manickam and Ashok Kumar and instructors from various driving schools took part in the motorcycle rally.

Meanwhile, more than 150 Junior Red Cross boys and girls took out a rally, holding banners and placards against the use of drugs and tobacco on the occasion of the International day against drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking.

Earlier, the IRC organised a seminar against drug abuse. Additional Superintendent of Police (ADSP) S. Vellaidurai flagged off the rally in the presence of S. Haroon, Vice Chairman, Indian Red Cross (IRC) and M. Ragland Madhuram, District secretary IRC, Ramanathapuram participated in the seminar.
