Coimbatore District (Rural) Police, investigating the death of N. Logeswari (19) during a disaster preparedness drill at a private college, will add more charges against G. Arumugam, 31, who impersonated himself as a trainer of National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).
The new charges will be for impersonation and misusing the name and reputation of NDMA.
The police will approach NDMA seeking a communiqué or complaint to register further charges against Arumugam.
“An official communication from NDMA with regard to the misuse of its name will be required to register additional charges against Arumugam. We will approach NDMA during the course of investigation,” said Coimbatore Rural Superintendent of Police Pa. Moorthy.
The current FIR registered against Arumugam is for offence under Section 304 (ii) of the IPC (Culpable homicide not amounting to murder).
Meanwhile, the investigating team on Wednesday took Arumugam to his residence at Mambakkam in Chennai suburbs as part of custodial interrogation.
The police team collected various documents and a computer. “Contents of the documents and date stored, if any, in the computer will be checked after the team reaches Coimbatore,” said a police officer adding that no money was recovered during the search.
According to police, the postal savings account belonged to Arumugam had meagre amount as balance. The police are also checking transaction history of his bank account.
During interrogation, Arumugam had claimed that he had been receiving money to the tune of ₹15,000 from a trust for every disaster management training he conducted in educational institutions. The accused had also told the police that the trust used to drop the money in a letter box kept outside his residence. The police are yet to verify his claims.
The sixth judicial magistrate court on Wednesday had sent Arumugam to police custody for four days.
