After hogging the limelight in the overall pass percentage in Plus Two examinations last year by securing the second rank at the State level, Ramanathapuram district slipped to the fourth place this year, recording an overall pass percentage of 95.88.

This backward district, which secured the ninth rank in 2016, made a stunning performance in 2017 by clinching the second position, recording an overall pass percentage of 96.77.

This year, the district witnessed a decline of 0.89% in the overall pass percentage from last year’s pass percentage. In all, 15,155 students, including 8,125 girls from 139 government, aided and private schools, appeared for the examinations and 14,531 of them passed. As usual, girls excelled boys with a pass percentage of 97.24, whereas the boys’ score was 94.31%.

Expressing disappointment over the performance of the district, Collector S. Natarajan said the district failed to improve its performance due to ‘inconsistency’ in the appointment of Chief Educational Officer (CEO) for the district. The district had a CEO for about eight months and he was transferred. Then R. Murugan held the post for four months, he said.

The district administration, which had been running ‘elite school’ for bright students, hailing from poor families, would offer special coaching in NEET for medical aspirants from this year onwards, he said.

The Collector said 44 schools had recorded 100% pass. This included 13 government, 27 matriculation and four aided schools, he said. Last year, 52 schools, including 23 government schools, recorded 100% pass.

Sivaganga district slipped from the fifth to the sixth position at the State level, recording an overall pass percentage of 95.60. In the overall pass percentage, the district witnessed a decline of 0.58 from last year’s 96.18.

A total of 15,917 students from 148 schools appeared for the examinations and 15,216 of them passed, Collector G. Latha said. In all, 54 schools, including 14 government schools, recorded 100% pass, she said. Special efforts would be made to improve the overall pass percentage next year, she said.
