Vellore district’s overall pass percentage in the Plus Two board examinations has come down to 85.47% from 87.06% in 2018. The district registered an overall pass percentage of 85.47% this year.

The district continued to be in the bottom half of the overall State rankings. It climbed up the ladder last year.

The district pass percentage in 2015 was 81.3%, in 2016 it was 83.13% and it registered 84.99% in 2017.

This year, out of the total 40,714 students (6,089 from boys schools, 11,403 from girls schools and 23,222 students from co-education schools), who appeared for the examination, 34,800 (4,693 boys, 10,230 girls and 19,877 co-education students) have passed. Girls have outdone boys by securing a pass percentage of 89.71%. A total of 77.07% of the boys passed.

S. Mars, Chief Educational Officer, Vellore, said the pass percentage of Vellore has steadily been improving over the last three years.

“But it was not clear what went wrong this year. We took a number of initiatives to motivate students and teachers.

“We asked schools to conduct daily slip tests in all subjects for the students. We also conducted number of motivational classes for students. Despite this, the results showed otherwise,” he said.

To a question on shortage of teachers, Mr. Mars said 220 PG teachers vacancies remained unfilled.

Mr. Mars agreed that performance needs to be improved in the coming years.

It is a collective responsibility on the part of teachers as well as students to put in extra efforts to achieve better results, he added.

“In order to improvise the results, we need to motivate students and teach lessons in a simpler way to make them understand,” said a former headmaster from Tirupattur taluk.

Government school students in Vellore district have achieved a pass percentage of 79.31, which was 82.70 in 2018.

A total of 20,709 students from 165 government schools appeared for the examinations. Of this, 16, 425 students have passed.
