Picture outraging religious sentiments posted on Whatsapp

A picture allegedly outraging religious sentiment that was posted on WhatsApp messenger and Facebook has led Cuddalore District Police to open up a first information report (FIR). Police is on the lookout for two youth in this connection.

The picture showing a youth putting his leg on the Muthumariamman deity has gone viral on WhatsApp and Facebook over the last few days.

Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam, Ariyankuppam, Puducherry were inscribed on the picture.

On seeing the picture, one Narayanasamy of Chinna Irusampalayam lodged a complaint with the Reddichavadi police alleging that the statue of Muthumariamman had been vandalised by the youths who came to the temple.

He also named two youths- Sivaraj and Venkat.

Case registered

Following the receipt of complaint, the police registered the case against the two persons under Sections- 153 A - (Promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion), 295A(Deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings or any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs) and 120 B(Punishment for Criminal conspiracy) of Indian Penal Code and 3 of Tamil Nadu Prevention of Public Properties Damages Act.

Arrest soon

V.M.Kumarabalan, Inspector of Police, Reddichavadi told The Hindu , “As the youth have spread messages on WhatsApp and Facebook, we have asked the Cyber Crime Police to collect the evidence. We will arrest the suspects soon.”
