Residents of P. Shanmugam Nagar near Tirunallar in the district have been undergoing an ordeal because of lack of basic amenities for the past few years.

Lack of proper road had been a major problem for most of them.

“The road which was laid at the time of formation of the residential colony about a decade ago is yet to be re-laid. It has developed a number of potholes at various problems,” say the residents. The problem is compounded by the non-functioning streetlights for several months, say the residents.

“The residential area accounts for a large number of middle income group and lower income group persons. Some of us workers in a private mill return home late night at the end of the shifts. We hardly have adequate visibility,” says C. Venkatesh who lives in the area.

Residents complain that although they had brought the matter to the notice of a number of social workers and volunteers, nothing had materialised. They wanted complete repair and maintenance of power lines and re-lay the road. As the road leads to Sri Saneeswarar temple from the bypass, a large number of tourists and pilgrims pass through P. Shanmugam Nagar, they said.
