As many as 780 teaching posts are vacant in various government schools in Krishnagiri district, said an official here on Wednesday.

He told The Hindu that 134 posts of Post Graduate Teachers and 646 posts of Graduate Teacher posts are vacant across the district. In spite of odd conditions, the department of school education has taken steps to teach the students with the help of Parent Teachers Associations, B.Ed. trainees from different schools of Teachers’ education in the district and showing good performance in government schools.

The official said that the District Collector C.N. Maheshwaran had convened a meeting of the Principals’ of the Teachers’ Education recently and appealed them to extend a helping hand in deploying them in the places of vacant posts to finish the portions to the students studying in Secondary and Higher Secondary level.

As many as 212 teachers were appointed by the Parent Teachers’ Association of the concerned schools. About 1200 B.Ed., trainees were deployed in various schools to take lessons for about forty days to cover the portion for the public examination.

Most of the teaching posts are perennially vacant in hilly areas and hard terrains in the district, as the new teachers posted in these areas would get transfer in the general counselling in the following year, this results the vacancy position always stood on the higher side, the official lamented.

Appointing teachers from the locally educated youths is the only long-lasting solution to tackle shortage of teachers in the hilly areas and hard terrains. To solve this, the government has to take a policy decision in this regard, the official adds.
