The International Skeletal Society (ISS) reached out to 45 young radiologists from across the country to build interest in them to take up musculoskeletal sub-specialisation.

C. Amarnath, organising secretary of AMS 2018 — 20th annual scientific meeting of Asian Musculoskeletal Society — said the ISS conducted Regional Outreach Programme for radiologists aged less than 45 years.

“The aim was to promote musculoskeletal radiology as a sub-specialisation among these young radiologists. They were trained by three radiologists from the United States in a one-day course,” he said.

Prathap C. Reddy, chairman of Apollo Hospitals Group, inaugurated AMS 2018 on Saturday. About 550 delegates from various Asian countries took part in the meeting. The sixth annual conference of Musculoskeletal Society of India was also organised.

A hands-on workshop was conducted for radiologists. A workshop on cadaver/arthroscopic anatomy with imaging correlation was conducted at Sri Ramachandra Medical College.

N. Chidambaranathan, organising chairman, AMS 2018, said general radiology focussed on large areas. “We need a sub-specialty like musculoskeletal radiology to focus on injuries of the muscles, tendons and ligaments. This can cater to orthopaedic surgeons and rheumatologists and help them to assess finer details,” he said.

K. Mohanan, president of Indian Radiological and Imaging Association (IRIA), said musculoskeletal radiology was the oldest branch of radiology. He said the first Asian Congress of Radiology would be held in 2020 in Ahmedabad.

James Griffith, secretary of AMS, spoke on the occasion.
