Training for teachers

A two-day training programme for school teachers of Kuzhithurai Educational District was held at the Narayanaguru College of Engineering recently. Chief Educational Officer V. Jeyakumar was the chief guest.

He spoke on awareness on ICT method of teaching.

C.P. Jesuthanam, Principal, welcomed the gathering.

Interactive session

An interactive session was organised by the English Literary Association of the Pioneer Kumaraswamy College in Nagercoil.

Mr. Roderick William Kyle Scott from Scotland was the guest of honour at the session.

Professor T. Dhanushkodia Pillai, Principal, presided over session.

Conference

The 10-th all-India conference of the Kanyakumari Academy of Arts and Science was held for two days at Women’s Christian College recently.

L. Louis Sam Titus, Chief General Manger, Indian Space Research Organisation, inaugurated the conference. S. Suja, organising secretary of the conference, spoke.

Principal Dr. Nirmala Manuel chaired the valedictory session.

Dr. Tharmaraj, Principal, M.S. University Constituent College, Kanyakumari, proposed a vote of thanks.

NSS volunteers clean temple premises

Sixty students of National Service Scheme of Vivekananda College, Tiruvedakam West, conducted a special camp at Nedunkulam village on October 4 in which they cleaned the environs of the Ayyanar and Murugan temples, community hall and library. They were also involved in levelling the road from Ayyanar temple to Murugan temple.

Research Centre inaugurated

The Research Centre in Chemistry of Saraswathi Narayanan College, Madurai, was inaugurated by S. Natarajan, Vice-Chancellor, Gandhigram Rural Institute, recently. In his inaugural address, Dr. Natarajan opined that too much of importance was being accorded to ICT and other computer courses. He said that these courses could not offer concrete solutions to social problems such as poverty, health, water crisis, unemployment and urbanisation. Basic science courses alone could provide progression to society. He urged the students to take up research activities at a higher level. N. Thiagarajan, secretary, presided over the function. M. Kannan, Principal, welcomed the gathering. K. Krishnan, Vice-Principal, and M. Jeyakumar, IQAC Coordinator, offered felicitations. K.K. Mothilal, Head, Department of Chemistry, proposed a vote of thanks.

Blood collected

The Red Ribbon Club, Youth Red Cross and NSS units of Madurai Sivakasi Nadars’ Pioneer Meenakshi Women’s College, Poovanthi, organised a blood donation camp on October 13 in association with Velammal Hospital and Medical College in which 42 units of blood was collected. About 60 staff members and 267 students participated,. It was inaugurated by. J. Ashok.

Workshop

A workshop on ‘Hardware and network troubleshooting’ was organised at Fatima Michael College of Engineering and Technology, Madurai, on September 28 in which students from various colleges participated.

T. Manikandan, Assistant Professor (CSE), spoke on ‘Network fundamentals, topologies and trouble shooting.’ G. Ari Prasad, Assistant Professor (CSE), delivered a lecture on ‘Architecture, peripheral devices and troubleshooting.’ Certificates were distributed to participants at the valedictory function.

Trends in literature

The Department of English of Sri S. Ramasamy Naidu Memorial College, Sattur, organised a seminar on ‘Trends in Commonwealth Literature’ on October 1. S. Venkateswaran, former Head, Regional Institute of English, Bengaluru, in his inaugural address, gave three tips to overcome one’s inability — through acceptance, accommodation and adaptation.

He spoke on newness not only in ideas but also in presenting the ideas. M. Chandrasekaran, Head, Department of English, welcomed the gathering. S. Nagarajan, Principal (in charge), delivered the presidential address. Mr. Venkateswaran, Jithin John, Joseph Rajarathinam and A.K. Muthusamy chaired the paper presentation sessions.

The valedictory address was delivered by S. Prabakar, Controller of Examinations, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University. S. Jayanthi, Assistant Professor of English, presented a report of the proceedings. R. Sumathi, Assistant Professor of English, convener of the seminar, proposed a vote of thanks.

Kalam remembered

The Standard Fireworks Rajaratnam College of Women, Sivakasi, celebrated the birth anniversary of former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam as Youth Awakening Day on October 15. More than 150 NSS volunteers, along with 10 staff members, took out a rally in the town, carrying placards with the quotes of Abdul Kalam. It was inaugurated by D. Sasirekha, Principal.

Extension activity

An extension activity on production of small-scale industrial products was organised by the Department of Chemistry, Ayya Nadar Janaki Ammal College, Sivakasi, for members of Sambangi women self-help group, Reserve Line, on October 13.

The activity was inaugurated by V. Pandiyarajan, Principal. M. Kumar Raja, Head, Department of Chemistry (UG), welcomed the participants. M. Meenakshisundaram, Head, Department of Chemistry (PG), delivered the presidential address. Members of Sambangi self-help group had hands-on training in preparation and marketing of products such as phenyl and incense sticks. Assistant Professors J. Maheswari, S. Senthilkumar and R. Ramprasath demonstrated the preparation of products and explained marketing strategies. T. Sugumaran, Associate Professor of Chemistry, proposed a vote of thanks.

Navaratri

celebrated

Navaratri festival was celebrated in a grand manner at SPJ Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Madurai, with students taking part in a ‘tiruvilakku puja.’ P. Abarna, correspondent, presided over the function and highlighted the importance of Navaratri. A. Ajitha, vice-president, proposed a vote of thanks.
