No clarity on Vasan’s position as trustee

November 09, 2014 01:04 am | Updated 01:04 am IST - CHENNAI:

While there is no clarity on the removal of the former Union Minister, G.K. Vasan, as the permanent trustee of the Congress Trust managing various assets of the party, TNCC president E.V.K.S. Elangovan has said Mr. Vasan ceased to be the trustee the day he relinquished the office of TNCC president.

However, party sources confirmed that Mr. Vasan was a permanent trustee. “It is a lifetime post. We have not been told whether he has been removed or not,” said one of the permanent trustees.

Besides Mr. Vasan, the former Congress Deputy Legislature Party leader, D. Yasoda, the former Union Minister, Jayanthi Natarajan, and Sudarsana Natchiappan, MP, are the trustees. The TNCC president is the ex-officio trustee. A senior leader close to Mr. Vasan said neither Mr. Vasan nor his supporters were bothered about the post.

Mr. Elangovan said the G.K. Moopanar memorial, located on the Congress grounds at Teynampet, was maintained by Royapuram Mano, a local leader.  “We all have great respect for Moopanar. I also know Mr. Vasan personally. He will never encourage any violence,” Mr. Elangovan said. However, he would not allow any non-Congressman to own the assets of the Congress Trust.

Asked about Congress leader Karti Chidambaram’s suggestion that the high-command allow the State unit to function independently, Mr. Elangovan said party leaders should desist from discussing inner party matters in the public.

Mr. Elangoavan said he would not believe that there was politics behind actor Kamal Haasan taking part in Swachch Bharat. “He is intelligent and he knows what he is doing.”
