NHRC asks TN to take legal action against headmistress

June 18, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:44 am IST - NEW DELHI:

The National Human Rights Commission has asked the Tamil Nadu Government to initiate legal action against the head mistress of a panchayat school at Vettankulam in Tirunelveli district for making two girl students clean the school’s toilet recently.

Terming the act of head mistress as “misconduct”, the Commission has also asked the State government to show cause why a relief of Rs.25,000 should not be paid to the two girls.

The NHRC found during the course of inquiry that the two girl students were daughters of a sweeper who, on that particular day, had not turned up for the job. Therefore, the head mistress asked the girls to clean the toilet.
