On the seventh day of the indefinite strike being staged by the members of Joint Action Council of Tamil Nadu Teachers’ Organisations - Government Employees Organisations (Jactto-Geo) on Monday, the police have detained nearly 1,000 protesters.
Among other demands, the members want the Contributory Pension Scheme to be scrapped.
The members staged a road roko in front of the Collector’s office from 11.30 a.m. to 2.00 p.m.
Prior to the agitation, Pravesh Kumar, Superintendent of Police, Vellore, spoke to the protesting members.
‘Ready for talks’
Soon after the demonstration, the police detained nearly 1,000 protestors.
They were taken to 10 marriage halls including at Katpadi, Konavattam and Sathuvachari. S.N. Janardhanan, State high level committee member, Jactto-Geo, said they were ready to hold talks with the State government to resolve the issue but the government was not ready.
They are demanding payment of 21-month arrears of the Seventh Pay Commission.
“We do not want the government to go ahead with its proposal to merge 3,500 elementary schools with high and higher secondary schools,” he added.
