National Voters’ Day celebrated

A rally was taken out to spread the importance of exercising one’s voting rights on the occasion of the National Voters’ Day on Sunday. The theme for this year’s celebration is “Easy Registration, Easy Correction”.

This was the fifth year of observing the National Voters’ Day in the country.

Electoral roll

In Vellore district, the draft electoral roll was published on October 15, 2014 with January 1, 2015 as qualifying date. Then, there were 28,77,642 voters – 14,25,136 men, 14,52,453 women and 53 transgenders, according to a press release.

Following a special summary revision of the roll from October 15 to November 10, 2014, 43,217 men and 44,718 women had applied for inclusion of their names in the electoral roll. After scrutinising their applications, 80,095 persons – 39,363 men and 40,732 women were included as new voters.

A total of 13,175 persons have been removed from the voters’ list due to various reasons – 7,625 persons due to death, 4,266 due to change of address and 1,284 due to double registration.

Pledge

The district consists of 3,409 polling booths. On the occasion of the National Voters’ Day, a pledge was taken and Electors’ Photo Identity Cards were issued to new voters. The pledge will also be taken up at the grama sabha meetings to be held on January 26.

Already, a number of initiatives such as rallies, mini marathons, debates, human chain, street plays were being taken up to create awareness on the day.

Honoured

On the occasion, the Collector R. Nanthagopal honoured the elderly, and distributed certificates to students who had won in various competitions such as essay writing, poetry and elocution, the release said.
