Muslim outfits demand suspension of Inspector

Various Muslim outfits are bracing themselves for an agitation on Saturday demanding the suspension of Pallikonda Inspector Martin Premraj following the death in the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, Chennai on Friday of Shameel Ahmed (26) of Ambur who was allegedly injured when he was the custody of the Inspector in Pallikonda.

Shameel Ahmed was picked up by the Ambur Taluk Police in connection with a girl missing case five days ago. Volunteers of the Thowheed Jamath on Tuesday blocked the road in front of the taluk office in Ambur demanding the suspension of Mr. Premraj, alleging that Shameel Ahmed has been severely beaten up in custody. Twenty-five volunteers were arrested.

Shameel Ahmed was admitted to the Government Hospital, Ambur, and later referred to the Government Vellore Medical College Hospital, Adukkamparai. Since his condition became serious, he was shifted to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, Chennai on Thursday. He died on Friday evening. Heavy police pickets have been posted in Ambur to maintain law and order in the wake of the death of Shameel.

R. Tamil Chandran, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Vellore Range, and P.K. Senthilkumari, Superintendent of Police, Vellore, were not available for comment.
