Despite opposition from DMK councillors, the Namakkal Municipality has allotted Rs. 1 crore for purchase of land for the new bus stand at Mudalaipatti on the Bangalore – Madurai National Highway 44 (earlier NH 7).
The Chief Minister, during the conference of Collectors and police officers held in Chennai on December 13, 2013, announced that a new bus stand would be established in Namakkal town at Rs. 35 crore. The 12.90- acre land belonging to Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments in Mudalaipatti was selected for the bus stand as the municipality needed to pay Rs. 8.06 crore for purchase of the land. However, the government promised to provide Rs. 7 crore as grant while the municipality needed to provide Rs. 1.06 crore from its general fund to purchase the land.
But DMK and Congress councillors said that traders and residents of the town had been opposing the proposal as it was located six km away from the town. Hence, they demanded that public opinion in all the 39 wards should be sought before deciding the location.
But chairman Karikalan said that their opinion would be registered. A resolution was passed in the emergency meeting for allotting Rs. 1 crore for purchase of land.
The traders are opposing the new bus stand as they say that their business will be affected. But officials said that the new proposal would ease traffic congestion in the town and pave the way for development of the town.
