Marine products outlet coming up

May 15, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:55 am IST - TUTICORIN:

Work on establishing a permanent marine products sale outlet near new bus-stand commenced on Thursday.

District Collector M. Ravikumar recently made arrangements to sell marine products through the Tamil Nadu Fisheries Development Corporation’s mobile shops as the fishes were being sold at exorbitant prices even at Tuticorin having a fishing harbour and a good number of coastal villages within a radius of 10 km.

Weekend sale

Since the fishes are being sold in these shops at a lesser price, the shops, selling Rs. 20,000-worth fishes on any given day, are enjoying a sale of over Rs. 40,000 on Saturdays and Sundays.

Buoyed by the response, the Collector has ordered to open a permanent shop near the new bus stand and work on the project commenced on Thursday on an outlay of Rs. 4.95 lakh.

“After work on this project is completed within a month, the mobile shop designated for the new bus stand will be sent elsewhere based on the response from the consumers,” the officials said.
