Man attempts suicide over land dispute

May 19, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 06:05 am IST - Dindigul:

One person attempted to commit suicide by pouring kerosene on his head in front of the Collector’s office here on Monday, alleging that no action had been initiated against a person who changed the ownership of his property in land records by creating bogus documents.

Muthuramalingam (39) of K. Rajadhanikottai poured kerosene over his head and tried to set himself on fire. Startled by his action, police personnel snatched the kerosene can from him, removed his dress immediately and poured water on him. Later, he was allowed to meet Collector T.N. Hariharan to air his grievance.

Muthuramalingam told the Collector that an unidentified person created bogus documents for his only property – a cultivable land measuring one acre and 11 cents – in his village and changed the land records with the revenue administration.

When he checked the records, his name was not there. The VAO too helped that person in changing the land records, he alleged. Though he made several appeals, no officials took steps to correct the tampered records, he added.

The Collector should take steps to help him get back his land by setting the records right, he pleaded.

The Collector directed officials to look into the matter and advised the petitioner not to take such extreme step. The petitioner was running a roadside tube vulcanising shop.
