“Madurai-Virudhunagar track doubling work soon”

Doubling of broad gauge section between Madurai and Tirunelveli and Tuticorin will be taken up shortly. Top priority will be given to Madurai-Virudhunagar section, according to Divisional Railway Manager Sunil Kumar Garg.

Talking to media persons at Dindigul railway station on Friday, he said that funds had been sanctioned for this project. The Madurai-Tirunelveli double tracj would be extended to Nagercoil.

Track doubling work between Palghat and Pollachi was almost over. It would be ready for operation of trains in June-end or mid-July. “We are waiting for inspection and clearance by Commissioner for Rail Safety. Opening Palghat-Palani track, after gauge conversion, will reduce travel distance to western and northern States significantly,” he said.

Similarly, the double track between Dindigul and Tiruchi section would be ready by the year-end or by early 2016. The track doubling would reducetravel time of all trains by at least 45 minutes. Electrification of tracks in these sections would be taken up simultaneously, he added.

To a question on installation of coach indicators at Dindigul railway stations, he said that the railway had tie up with advertisers for installation of coach indicators. At Madurai junction, coach indicators were commissioned under such tie-ups. Sixteen railway stations in the Madurai division, including Dindigul, would get such facility shortly.

Yard work, including linking of all tracks with the first and the seventh tracks, was in progress. The work on Nagal Nagar side was almost over and the work on Balakrishnapuram side was in progress. Laying of roof on the platform was almost over, he added.
