Young graduates should “learn about the golden era of our country and carry forward the rich legacy of the ancient Indians,” said Governor Ch. Vidyasagar Rao, at the convocation of Dr. MGR University on Wednesday.

Mr. Rao sprinkled his speech with quotes to impress on the graduands the need to appreciate the country’s contribution to science from ancient times.

“The education system introduced by Lord Macaulay caused great damage to our indigenous education system which promoted the spirit of enquiry and innovation. You have to act as a bridge between our future generation and glorious past,” he told the graduates.

“I have only two suggestions. You are already stepping in when India’s economy is growing. Today, there are many opportunities and openings. Utilise these opportunities and bring laurels to the country. Be the nation’s cultural ambassadors,” Mr. Rao urged the students.

On the occasion, honorary doctorate degrees were conferred on actor/director and educationist M. Mohan Babu and technical director - LWR, Nuclear Power Corporation of India, S. Singha Roy.

Founder of the university A.C. Shanmugam said the institution was holding its 26th convocation. A total of 2,192 candidates received their degrees on Tuesday. They included 22 Ph.D. candidates, 17 M. Phil graduates, 321 post-graduate and 1,832 undergraduates.
