“State should nominate candidate to panel”

The State government should nominate a candidate to the five-member Empowered Committee to be constituted to consider issues relating to the Mullaperiyar dam dispute, according to G. Ramakrishnan, CPI (M) State Secretary.

“It is essential to highlight Tamil Nadu’s stand,” he told reporters here on Sunday.

He termed “an incorrect one” the DMK’s decision not to nominate a person on the panel. “They should have convened an all party-meeting before arriving at a decision since the issue concerns the entire State.”

Reacting to CPI State Secretary D. Pandian’s remark that W.R. Varada Rajan’s death should kindle a debate in CPI (M) over its functioning, he said that “whatever the stance he is taking in his party, it’s up to him to decide and we will not interfere in any of them. We are expecting the same from him when it comes to matters within our party,” he added.

On the Union budget, Mr. Ramakrishnan said that it was indeed a disappointment for the common man.
