Vehicular traffic came to a standstill for over an hour in various parts around T. Nagar on Sunday afternoon. Traffic police cited the heavy shopping rush for the upcoming festival season as the reason for traffic snarls.

Many motorists experienced unusual traffic congestion right from G. N. Chetty Road to Pondy Bazaar, and around Panagal Park and the Duraisamy subway in West Mambalam. The heavy rush of people at the shopping den for Christmas shopping led to the bottle neck traffic.

According to Ananthapadmanabhan, a resident on Rameshwaram Road near Duraisamy Subway, traffic jam was a daily affair, and the scene got particularly chaotic during festival time. “Traffic regulation around the shopping area is bad. People park vehicles their vehicles at unspecified locations leading to blockage of free flow of traffic,” he added.

However, the traffic in the congested points gradually started to move and free flow was restored within two hours, police said.
