‘Know your police’ scheme covers targeted students

Aimed at helping them shed inhibitions about police

October 02, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:41 am IST - Ramanathapuram:

The district police who introduced ‘Know your police’, an awareness programme for school students to help them get an insight into the functioning of police system, have completed the first phase, covering more than 12,000 Plus One and Plus Two students of government higher secondary schools.

After the launch of the remodelled programme on July 27, police teams, led by nodal officers, visited all the 66 government higher secondary schools in the district and interacted with the students after distributing pamphlets, detailing about the First Information Report (FIR), investigation procedures and the duties of sentry and station writer, Superintendent of Police N.M. Mylvahanan said.

Aimed at helping the students shed inhibitions about the police force and improving the image of the police, the programme was launched on July 4 by inviting students to visit the town police station here, but the programme was remodelled after studying the feedback.

In the next phase, the students would be taken to the police stations in their respective regions, he said.

In the two months, the police teams had covered all the 12,470 students and proposed to cover the students of private schools in the second phase, he said.

Interaction

The Local Panchayat Liaison Officer (PLO), the nodal officer from the concerned sub-division, and the Inspectors of Police and others from the police stations visited the schools in their police limits in the evening hours with the permission of heads of the schools and interacted with the students, he said.

“We planned it initially for Plus One students, but accommodated Plus Two students too after they showed a lot of interest,” the SP said, adding the teachers also benefited by the programme, if the feedback was any indication.

The students were taught how to identify police officers with the help of stars and emblem they wore, the procedure followed before filing a charge sheet and the important documents maintained in police stations. The students were also informed about All Women Police Stations and traffic rules, signs, manual traffic signs and eligibility for driving, he added.
