Karunanidhi's appeal

February 18, 2012 02:53 am | Updated 02:53 am IST - CHENNAI:

DMK president M. Karunanidhi on Friday asked party functionaries to celebrate the centenary year of the Dravidian movement in a grand manner.

Writing in the party organ Murasoli , he said that the origin of the movement could be traced to the formation of the Madras United League, an organisation of non-Brahmins, in 1912 under the leadership of C. Natesa Mudaliar. It was later renamed the Dravidian Association. Dr. Natesan was one of the founders of the South India Liberal Federation, better known as the ‘Justice Party'.

“It was the Dravidian Association that provided the foundation for all that we stand for today – linguistic affinity, rationalism and social justice – and it is our duty to celebrate this centenary for a whole year from Saturday,” Mr. Karunanidhi said.
