Karunanidhi gives cash awards to World Cup victors

Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Thursday handed over cheques for Rs. 3 crore to the members of the victorious Indian team, led by M.S. Dhoni, in the 2011 World Cup.

R. Ashwin, the lone Tamil Nadu member in the squad, was given a separate cash award of Rs.1 crore.

The State government had announced the reward to the team soon after it won the final against Sri Lanka in Mumbai on April 2. The money was divided equally among the members of the squad.

Dhoni and teammates Suresh Raina received cheques from Mr. Karunanidhi, while N. Srinivasan, honorary secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India , collected the cheques on behalf of other members of the squad. Finance Minister K. Anbazhagan and Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, senior ministers and officials were present.
