Makkal Needhi Maiam founder Kamal Haasan on Sunday said that his party would not be contesting the by-elections to be held for Vikravandi and Nanguneri Assembly constituencies on October 21.

In a statement, Mr. Haasan said that the by-polls would be nothing more than a power struggle between the ruling party and the Opposition. Earlier this year, he had opted out of the Vellore Lok Sabha by-election.

“Makkal Needhi Maiam refuses to be a part of this corrupt political play played in the name of by-elections of Nanguneri and Vikravandi as it is very apparent that the by-elections will be nothing more than the power struggle between the current ruling party and the party which ruled earlier, to retain their power and positions they have,” he contended.

He claimed that his party was working towards forming a government in Tamil Nadu in 2021.

“Makkal Needhi Maiam is rapidly working towards garnering the unilateral support of the people of Tamil Nadu and to form the government in 2021, thereby effectively removing the old, redundant political parties and their corrupt counterparts to provide a good governance that the people of Tamil Nadu deserve,” he said.
