The mood of the general public and leaders of various political parties following the Karnataka High Court’s judgement on Monday acquitting AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa from the disproportionate assets case was reflected in the virtual world too, with netizens divided in their opinion over the verdict.
Though it were only the media houses that reminded their followers of the scheduled verdict until forenoon, the general public flooded the social media platforms with hashtags soon after the judgment was pronounced at 11 am in Bengaluru.
While #JayaVerdict was trending all day on Twitter, #Jayalalithaa stood first in the list of trending topics on Facebook. Instagram was flooded with pictures of AIADMK cadres bursting crackers and distributing sweets.
1 lakh entries
According to Google Trends, there were over a lakh entries each for ‘Jayalalithaa verdict’ and ‘Jayalalithaa’ from across the country on Monday. There were several tweets from twitter handles supporting the verdict with #AmmaReturns and #AmmaIsBackthe only official reaction on the verdict came from Ms. Jayalalithaa herself in a statement sent from her party office.
Senior BJP leader Subramanian Swamy, who played a crucial role in the case tweeted, “JJ was convicted by Session Court it was Kannadiga bias. She is now acquitted by KHC so vindication and justice. If SC convicts her then?”
DMK chief @kalaignar89 and his son and senior leader @mkstalin shared the same opinion on the verdict. “There is a higher court than courts of justice and that is the court of conscience. It supercedes all other courts” - Mahatma Gandhi,” Mr. Stalin tweeted.
