Jayalalithaa's appeal to party members

February 11, 2012 01:53 am | Updated 01:53 am IST - CHENNAI:

The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary and Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Friday called upon her party members to strive hard for securing all 40 parliamentary seats [39 in Tamil Nadu and one in Puducherry] in the Lok Sabha elections.

This would be their precious prize to her, Ms Jayalalithaa said in a statement issued on the occasion of her birthday that would fall on [as per the Roman calendar] February 24.

She recalled that the AIADMK founder and former Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran had never celebrated his birthday and would not meet visitors that day.

The AIADMK leader advised her party colleagues not to hold ostentatious events that would only sadden her. She pointed out that as the previous Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam had indulged in organising lavish functions regularly, this was one of the reasons for that party's defeat in the Assembly elections.
