Intermittent drizzle continued in southern districts on Sunday night and in a few places on Monday, raising hopes that the northeast monsoon would start at least in the fourth week of October.

Though the sky remained overcast throughout Sunday, drizzle restarted only in the night. And this situation continued on Monday too with the sky remaining cloudy.

As flood subsided in Courtallam waterfalls, police allowed visitors, mostly locals, to take bath in the falls on Monday.

Most of the reservoirs in the district did not have substantial inflow of water on Monday since there was no significant rainfall in the catchment areas.

Rainfall recorded at various places in the district was (in mm): Gundar dam – 57, Shencottai – 53, Papanasam dam – 52, Alangulam – 50.20, Manimuthar dam – 46.10, Tenkasi – 40, Sankarankovil – 34, Aayikudi – 30.20, Cheranmahadevi – 30, Ambasamudram – 25.10, Radhapuram – 24, Nambiyar dam and Ramanadhi dam – 23, Palayamkottai – 20, Karuppanadhi dam – 15, Nanguneri – 14, Tirunelveli – 11.40, Veerakeralamputhur – 10, Adavinainarkovil dam – 6, Kodumudiyar dam and Sivagiri – 5 and Gadana dam – 3.

In Tuticorin, the overnight rain caused water stagnation in several parts of the port town.

Since most of the roads in Tuticorin had been dug for underground drainage work and the damaged stretches are yet to be relaid, water stagnating in the trenches poses serious threat to the public.

Rainfall recorded at various places in the district was (in mm): Tuticorin – 64, Kazhugumalai – 42, Tiruchendur – 30, Kulasekarapattinam – 23, Kayalpattinam – 22.20, Ottapidaram – 20, Kadambur – 17, Sattankulam – 13.60, Maniyaachi – 13, Vedanaththam – 10, Kayathar – 9, Kovilpatti – 8.20, Srivaikundam – 6, Ettaiyapuram – 4, Keezha Arasadi – 2.50, Vilathikulam – 2.20 and Kadalkudi – 2.

Kanyakumari district also received good rainfall on Sunday night and intermittent drizzle on Monday.

Areas close to the Western Ghats recorded good rainfall on Sunday night and all the dams are experiencing good inflow of water.

Since the district, after experiencing good rainfall during the southwest monsoon, is getting significant precipitation now, almost all irrigation tanks are brimming with water.

Rainfall recorded in the district was (in mm): Mayiladi – 54.20, Kottaram – 35.20, Kozhiporevilai – 23.50, Colachel – 22.40, Mambazhathuraiyar dam – 20, Eraniel – 18.40, Aanaikidangu – 18.20, Kannimar – 11.60, Poigai dam and Aralvoimozhi – 10.40, Surulacode – 10, Balamore – 9.40, Pechipparai dam and Nagercoil – 9.20, Perunchani dam – 8.40, Kurunthancode – 8, Puthananai – 7.80, Chittar I dam – 6.20, Mullanginavilai – 6 and Bhoothapandi – 5.50.
