Improve seafood consumption level, says Collector

‘Open Day’ was organised at the Fisheries College and Research Institute (FCRI) here on Friday in commemoration of the foundation day of Tamil Nadu Fisheries University (TNFU), which came into existence on the same day in 2012 at Nagapattinam.

G.Sugumar, Dean (in-charge), welcomed the gathering. Collector M. Ravikumar, in his address, highlighted the importance of TNFU for the State with regard to the development of fisheries sector.

He said Tuticorin district has a lengthy coast of 168.5 km and efforts should be taken to sustain the potential resources.

The TNFU should involve in developing various technologies in fisheries for the benefit of stakeholders and fisheries course should contain subjects on environmental protection and marine resource conservation. Further, he emphasised the importance of seafood consumption for a healthier society.

Focus

To improve the consumption level, the TNFU had to concentrate on the various studies on resource availability, demand and supply of local markets, he added.

Vice Chancellor of TNFU Baskaran Manimaran, in his presidential address, explained the vision of the government in the formation of the university in 2012, its subsequent achievements and developments.

Chief Educational Officer M. Ramakrishnan said the Open Day would benefit the students and public by widening their knowledge of fisheries technologies and education.

Around 2000 students from 20 schools and the public visited the museum, library, hatchery, e-learning laboratory, fish farms, aquariums, aquaculture laboratory, feed mill, Biology laboratory, exhibition of coastal aquaculture and fisheries extension department, audio-visual lab, virology lab, quality control laboratory, fish processing hall, fishing technology and engineering workshop, environmental laboratory and economics laboratory on the FCRI campus, which remained open to public from 9.30 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. R. Santhakumar, Head, Department of Fisheries Extension, proposed a vote of thanks.
