Hunger strike against textile park

October 28, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:44 am IST - CUDDALORE:

Several organisations and villagers on Tuesday observed a hunger protest at Periyapet near Chidambaram against the commissioning of a textile processing park.

The People's Movement Against Nuclear Energy coordinator, S.P. Udayakumar, Tamizh Desiya Periyakkam General Secretary K.Venkatraman and leaders of other organisation participated in the protest.

The agitators claimed the park would lead to severe pollution resulting in irreparable damage to environment. It would also affect the livelihood of farmers and fishermen in 30 villages near the site.

At a time when a few villages have already been affected by depleting groundwater levels and the commissioning of the park would aggravate the situation. The effluents from the park would also be released into the sea.
