Hostel warden surrenders

P. Punitha, warden of a women's hostel at Hope College, who along with its owner was booked for alleged harassment of inmates, surrendered before a court in Coimbatore on Wednesday.

She surrendered before sixth judicial magistrate court on Wednesday afternoon. Magistrate K.R. Kannan remanded her in judicial custody till August 14.

Peelamedu Police Inspector (Law and Order) V. Selvaraj said that an application seeking the custody of Punitha will be submitted before court after consulting senior officials.

He said that two bank accounts belonged to Punitha had around ₹25,000.

Punitha and Dharsana Residency Women's Hostel's owner Jaganathan are accused of having forced to five residents to consume liquor before and after latter's birthday dinner at a restaurant near Town Hall in Coimbatore.

They are booked under Sections 75 (1) (c) of the Tamil Nadu City Police Act (penalty for drunkenness or riotous behaviour in public places), 506 (ii) of the Indian Penal Code (criminal intimidation) and Section 4 of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act (harassing women in public places).

Jaganathan who had gone absconding was found dead in a well at Alangulam in Tirunelveli on July 26.
