Superintendent of Police N.M. Mylvahanan led the district police in paying homage to 442 police personnel and officers, who had sacrificed their lives, while on duty, on the occasion of Police Commemoration Day here.
After a commemoration parade in respect of the slain policemen, the SP, Collector K. Nanthakumar and representatives of all ranks paid their respects by placing wreaths at the Martyrs’ column at the Armed Reserve Police Grounds on Wednesday.
Those who paid floral tributes included Deepak S. Belgi, Wildlife Warden, Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park, Sudha, Assistant Conservator of Forest (training), Additional Superintendent of Police (Prohibition and Enforcement Wing) S. Vellaidurai and Deputy Superintendent of Police (AR Police) M. Dhandeeswaran.
The SP said a total of 442 police personnel and officers had laid down their lives from September 1, 2014 to August 31, 2015, leaving behind their grieving families in order to secure and ensure the twin goals of peace and freedom.
Those who achieved martyrdom included 108 police personnel from Uttar Pradesh, 47 from Border Security Force (BSF), 37 from Chattisgarh, 24 from Jammu and Kashmir and 23 from West Bengal, he said.
In Sivaganga, SP M. Durai led the district police in paying homage to the police martyrs. Senior police officials and a host of police personnel paid homage at a ceremony held at AR campus.
The history of the commemoration day traces back to October 21, 1959, when a patrol party of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) was ambushed by the Chinese forces at Hot sprints, on an altitude of 16,000 ft, killing 10 jawans.
