HMK president held in Thirukovilur

The police arrested Hindu Makkal Katchi president Arjun Sampath and four others in Thirukovilur near here on Monday after they defied police orders and attempted to visit Ambur in Vellore district which recently witnessed violence.

Earlier, Mr. Sampath submitted a memorandum to the District Collector V. Sampath demanding a judicial inquiry into the violence unleashed by a mob on the Chennai-Bengaluru National Highway at Ambur.

The police informed him that he could not go to the troubled spot on grounds of law and order. But he insisted on going to Ambur. The police arrested Sampath, Dakshinamoorthy, Ponnusamy, Asaithambi and Chandrasekar.
