The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court, hearing the plea of a woman seeking protection from her parents, directed the Superintendent of Police of Karur district to look into the issue and grant sufficient protection to the woman and her husband.

Justice N. Anand Venkatesh directed the police official to immediately, on receiving a representation from the woman, call the parties concerned and conduct an enquiry. Sufficient protection should be given, if it was ascertained that the parents and her relatives were interfering in her life. The court also directed appropriate action be taken if interference on the part of the parents continued following the court’s order.

The court observed that the woman was a major and once she had made her decision, parents and relatives had no right to interfere in her life.

The court was hearing the case of a Karur woman, who married her boyfriend belonging to another caste against the wishes of her parents. The couple moved to Tiruchi, but continued to receive threats from her parents and relatives. A complaint was lodged at the Cantonment police station.

Following an inquiry, the parents gave an undertaking to the police that they would not interfere in their daughter’s life. However, the threats did not stop. The woman moved the High Court seeking protection from her parents, who were interfering in her life.
