The Veterinary University Training and Research Centre (VUTRC) at Rajapalayam celebrated ‘Pongal Vizha-2015’ here with focus on healthcare and treatment for animals.
A total of 510 animals, including cows, calf, goats, sheep, dog and desi chicken, were screened and treated at a camp organised here on Tuesday as part of the festival which began on January 14 to mark the Bogi festival.
De-worming and vaccination were done for dogs, sheep and goats.
An awareness programme on the importance of mineral mixture supplement for the health of animals was also conducted.
K. Chellasamy, Regional Joint Director in-charge of Animal Husbandry Department, Virudhunagar district, S. Kathirvel, Professor and Head, VUTRC, Rajapalayam, and Sanjeevi Rajan, Assistant Director (Animal Husbandry), Srivilliputtur, were among those who were present.
G. Srinivasan, Assistant Professor, VUTRC, said Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University conducted Pongal celebrations every year at various centres to highlight the importance of animal health.
Veterinary assistant surgeons from the department interacted with the owners of the animals and also provided them tips on livestock health.
