The Madras High Court on Tuesday stayed the construction of a new building for Chennai Silks at the location in T. Nagar here where a seven-storey building of the textile showroom got gutted in a fire on May 31 last year.
Justices N. Kirubakaran and Krishnan Ramasamy granted the interim order on a writ petition filed by Kannan Balachandran, who claimed that 40% of the construction work for the eight-storey structure had been completed within just 20 days since a building plan approval was granted on June 21. The judges restrained officials concerned from reclassifying the locality where the showroom was located from a residential area into a commercial area and directed Corporation officials to be present in court along with relevant documents on August 3.
