HC seeks report on

elephant movement

The Madras High Court on Monday directed the Forest Department to file a report within four weeks on the steps taken by it to curb the entry of elephants into agricultural areas abutting the Palani hills in Dindigul district. First Division Bench of Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice P.T. Asha issued the direction on a PIL filed by A.R. Gokulakrishnan whose counsel claimed that the elephants were forced to enter the agricultural areas because of the failure of the Forest department to clear the thorny bushes and weeds that had grown all over the forest area.

Special Government Pleader E. Manohar brought it to the notice of the court that several steps had been taken by the Forest department to avoid man-animal conflict. He sought a month’s time to place before the court a detailed report. containing the steps taken by the government officials on the issue.
