‘Green wastes’ in lake puzzle officials

October 06, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:47 am IST - KODAIKANAL:

Wastes, including plants such as moss or algae, floating on the lake here spoil the beauty of the lake and also comes in the way of tourists rowing boats.

After tourists complained that a foul smell emanated from the water, revenue officials inspected the lake and checked the level of pollution. Later, they asked the municipal officials to take action. The Kodaikanal municipality deputed a team of workers to remove the wastes from the lake. But the ‘green wastes’ have resurfaced much to the shock of officials.

Earlier, the officials used to justify that “organic matters surfaced when water level is low in the lake.” But the level is high now owing to heavy rain.

The revenue officials have collected samples of the wastes and sent them for laboratory test.
