Ganja worth Rs. 5 lakh being cultivated in a jasmine field was destroyed and a peddler was arrested here at Sundekuppam in Kaveripattinam on Thursday.
The accused Raja was first intercepted based on a tip-off that ganja was being peddled in Sundekuppam area. A police patrol had rounded up Raja, who on interrogation, revealed that he was growing ganja in a field.
Following this, a team from the Narcotics Intelligence Bureau (NIB), Salem, led by DSP N. Thangavel raided the jasmine field, where Raja had grown ganja. According to sources, the accused had taken the land on lease from a farmer under the pretext of cultivating jasmine and had used it grow ganja.
The gang plants were destroyed. Raja was arrested and ganja worth Rs. 50,000 in his possession was also seized.
