Free notebooks, uniforms distributed to students

As many as 1,44,260 free notebooks have been given to high and higher secondary students of government and aided schools in the district.

Students pursuing education in primary and middle schools had also received 1,00,554 free notebooks at the start of this academic year, Collector M. Ravikumar said here on Monday.

Besides, free uniform sets were also provided to 1,12,557 students. Under the Right to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act, 2009, which allows 25 per cent free seats for children belong to the weaker section in private schools, he said 166 students had so far been given admissions to LKG in various schools.

Applications numbering 625 had been received by the Education Department to join schools under this facility. Out of 5,742 seats in total for admissions to LKG in 78 private matriculation schools in the district, 1, 432 seats were allotted under this category.

As for the first standard, eight out of 32 allotted seats had been filled under this Act, the Collector told the media.

On job fair organised at Pope’s College, Sawyerpuram, on Saturday by district administration in the interest of unemployed youths in Srivaikuntam, he said there was a good response from job seekers.

Besides selecting over 700 candidates instantly at the job fair, letters were also forwarded by employers to 1,282 candidates, who had been selected.

The job fair was organised as part of communal harmony building camps at villages in Srivaikuntam taluk.

So far, 15 villages had been covered under this camp and a series of benefits were extended to the people.

A total of 154 entrepreneurs from various villages of Srivaikuntam had applied for starting small scale industrial units under 25 per cent loan subsidy.

Moreover, six persons had registered under Overseas Manpower Corporation of Tamil Nadu and 38 others also applied for assistance to the unemployed, he said. Tuticorin Sub-Collector S.Gopala Sundara Raj was present.
