Road Safety Week celebrations drew to a close on Wednesday with the public taking a pledge to obey traffic rules and make Tamil Nadu an accident-free state.
Addressing a function organised by the Regional Transport Office, marking the culmination of the celebrations from January 11 to 13 and 18 to 21 here, Collector K Nanthakumar said the Road Safety Week celebrations formed part of sincere measures of the government to create awareness of road safety to prevent road accidents.
He said Tamil Nadu was one of the three States in the country to witness more number of road accidents and called upon the public in general and road users in particular to observe road safety measures and obey traffic rules.
The Collector distributed prizes to school and college students who won prizes in essay, oratorical, slogan writing and drawing competitions. In all, 12 winners, three each in the two categories, were awarded total cash prizes of Rs. 40,000.
The competitions were organised by the department on January 18 at various schools and colleges, Regional Transport Officer J. Sheik Mohamed said. Thanks to the awareness created, the district did not witness any fatal accidents during the Road Safety Week celebrations, he said.
The department organised many programmes in Ramanathapuram and Sivaganga districts, with focus on awareness of road safety, traffic rules and prevention of accidents.
Karaikudi
At a function organised in Karaikudi, Collector T. Munusamy distributed prizes to winners of competitions. In both the districts, the Transport Department organised photo exhibitions and rallies. Drivers of various government departments and schools and colleges were given certificates for 10 years of accident-free service.
