Parents of the children who perished or injured in the fire that ravaged Sri Krishna Primary School here in 2004 have reiterated their demand for a higher compensation from the State government.

On Monday, parents of five children deposed before the commission of inquiry going into the quantum of enhanced compensation being sought.

Ninety four children were charred to death while 18 others sustained critical injuries in the inferno.

The State government had sanctioned Rs. One lakh as compensation to the parents of children who had died.

But the affected parents moved the Madras High Court seeking higher compensation following which the court had constituted the one-man commission under retired Judge Venkatraman and the panel had held sittings in Kumbakonam eliciting the views of the affected parents.

During the earlier phases, the parents had sought compensation of Rs. 25 lakh each at 9 per cent per annum interest though petitions filed with the commission.

With the tenth phase of inquiry over, fifty parents had deposed and submitted petitions with the panel.

The next sitting would be held on May 26, sources here said.
