Farmers urged not to use roadside for drying crops

In the course of road safety awareness currently underway in the district, the district administration chose to address the unwitting accidents caused by road-side drying of harvested produce.

A meeting was held here under the aegis of the district administration on Wednesday.

Presiding over the meeting on road safety awareness, Collector K.Vivekanandan addressed the practice of drying harvested crops on the roads, causing road accidents, with the harvest season already on.

Urging farmers to avoid using the already narrow rural roads, or suburban roads for the drying and beating of crops, Mr.Vivekanandan said the produce piled up on roads posed a safety risk to two-wheelers and also four-wheelers. There are exclusive drying and beating plots in every village that should put to use by farmers, the administration has urged.

Further, the agriculture department’s field officers were directed to ensure allocation of such open plots for the purpose. In addition, agricultural officers were asked to create awareness among farmers in all possible forums. The administration would provide infrastructure to provide exclusive drying plots for the harvested crops such as ragi, corn and paddy, Mr.Vivekananandan said.
