May 20, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:37 am IST

Members of Confederation of Indian Industry, Coimbatore Zone, and Young Indians Coimbatore chapter sent relief materials on Tuesday to those affected by earthquake in Nepal. The association members sent apparels, blankets, food items, kitchen equipment, etc., worth nearly Rs. 10 lakh.

The Confederation is working at the national-level with the Union Government in providing relief materials to Nepal.

Garment exporters in Tirupur also sent relief materials to Nepal recently. Industries in the region have been contributing to those affected in natural calamities not only individually, but also through industrial associations.  Sometimes it is in coordination with the local industrial associations in the affected areas, and sometimes with the State or Central Governments.

This is a voluntary initiative and there is no compulsion on the member units to contribute. Sometimes the staff of the industrial unit also contributes.

The contributions include cash, food materials, clothing, etc. It could also be assisting those in the affected areas with skill training and jobs.

Southern India Engineering Manufacturers’ Association members had jointly sent relief materials in the 1960s too, says a representative of the association. The materials are handed over at the Collectorate. “We inform the members and we go and collect the materials from the member units and hand it over to the Government,” says the representative.

The associations also take up joint programmes for rehabilitation or providing relief materials. Be it during the Gujarat earthquake, or tsunami, Coimbatore’s industrial associations had taken up such efforts, say sources.
