Evict Sastra from govt. land: Stalin

October 02, 2018 12:53 am | Updated 12:53 am IST - CHENNAI

DMK president M.K. Stalin on Monday urged the State government to immediately evict Sastra University from the government land which it had encroached, and start the construction of an open prison on the site in Thanjavur.

In a statement in Chennai, he said even though the deemed university had been asked to vacate the 20.62-acre land, the institution had not made any effort to remove the buildings and vacate the land.

“It seems Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami is helping the university and I condemn his inaction,” he said.

Mr. Stalin wondered why the government, which used the police force to evict pavement dwellers and farmers from their land for the Salem-Chennai green corridor project, was not doing anything in the case of Sastra University.

‘Govt. lying on AIIMS’

The DMK leader accused the AIADMK government in the State and the BJP government at the Centre of lying about setting up a branch of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Madurai.

In a statement, he said that though the governments had claimed that ₹2,000 crore had been allotted for the project, in reality, nothing had been done so far to implement it.

He said that as per the information obtained under the RTI Act by Madurai-based Hakkim Kasim, the Union Health Minister had not granted permission to set up an AIIMS in Madurai, and no funds had been allotted for the purpose.
