There is an urgent need to put an end to child marriage menace for the overall development of society, said P. Valarmathi, Social Welfare Minister, here on Friday.
The girls should leave no stone unturned to pursue higher education and the parents had to support them, Ms. Valarmathi said while speaking at a function to distribute gold for the thaali and the marriage assistance to the women getting married, at a function held at the Collectorate.
Edappadi K. Palanisamy, State Highways and Minor Ports Minister, said that the State government had taken initiative to solve the drinking water problem in the Gengavalli area.
Referring to the implementation of welfare schemes in the district, Mr. Palanisamy said mixers, grinders and table fans worth Rs. 252 crore had been distributed to 4.90 lakh families so far. People who had not received the freebies would be covered soon, he added.
Ms. Valarmathi gave away marriage assistance to the tune of Rs. 5.86 crore to 1,594 women along with 6,376 gram gold for thaali.
