Employment office gets new building

The District Employment Office, which had been functioning in a rented building amid lot of inconveniences for more than a decade, has got a new building near the Collectorate with facilities to offer coaching guidance for job seekers and facility for recruitment for private companies. Chief Minister Jayalalithaa inaugurated the office through video conferencing on Thursday. The office in the new building near Central library in ‘D’ block would start functioning from June 29. The 9,500 sq ft building with ground and first floor has been built at a cost of Rs 1.50 crore.

The office was functioning in a private building in a congested area amid lot of inconveniences since 2004, Collector K. Nanthakumar said in the video conferencing and thanked the Chief Minister on behalf of the people for providing the new building.

A. Baby Rani, a Tamil literature graduate from Mandapam, thanked the Chief minister for helping her get a government job after she attended coaching at the employment office.

District Employment Officer S. Hariharan Babu said that the ground floor had reception and registration halls while the coaching guidance room, private employment room, District Employment Officer (youth employment service) room and coaching class library were located on the first floor.

He said the office had been offering free coaching and guidance to those appearing for examinations conducted by the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission since 2012. In the Group IV examinations, 220 candidates were offered coaching and 24 of them cleared them, he said. Presently, 210 candidates were attending coaching classes for Group II examinations, Mr. Babu said.

As of now, 1.55 lakh people had registered for employment and about 30,000 of them had the maximum seniority of more than 25 years, he added. A. Latha, Regional Joint Director (Employment), and Ganesamurthy, Junior Employment Officer, and MLA M.H. Jawahirullah were present.
