The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has busted a major gang involved in illegal drug manufacturing and exporting the contraband.
The DRI officers seized a huge quantity of a cocktail of narcotics worth ₹71 crore after raiding a manufacturing facility in Red Hills and its godown in the city.
In this connection, 10 persons, including a Malaysian national, have been arrested, said officials who refused to disclose the names of the arrested.
The DRI Chennai unit received a specific input that a huge quantity of methamphetamine , a recreational drug, was being manufactured illicitly at a facility located in Red Hills and stored at a godown in the city.
A search by the officers revealed that the gang was using a detergent powder as a facade for the illicit manufacture of drugs.
In a secluded portion of the manufacturing facility, the gang installed an elaborate apparatus to process and “cook” methamphetamine under finely controlled conditions, said a release from the DRI, Chennai unit.
Simultaneously, the godown was also raided.
Raw material
Some methamphetamine and a large quantity of raw materials used for its manufacture were found at the godown.
The organiser of the gang as well as nine other persons. including a Malaysian national, involved in manufacture, testing and storage of the drug were arrested.
Totally, 11 kg of methamphetamine , 56 kg pseudoephedrine and 90 kg of heroin together valued at about ₹71 crore were seized. Further investigation is in progress.
