Drive against child labour

As part of creating awareness on eradication of child labour, a slew of programmes have been arranged by the department of labour in Kanyakumari district from June 8 to 12.

A release issued by the labour department said that the State Labour Commissioner P. Amutha had ordered the conduct of various programmes to eradicate child labour in the State. As per the directions, at a consultative meeting conducted by the Collector, Sajjansingh R. Chavan, on June 8, it was decided to conduct awareness rallies by students, signature campaigns in schools and industries.

As part of this, a cultural programme was organised at the Rotary Hall near the Collectorate by nagaswaram and folklore artistes. The artistes were given merit certificates by M. Baskaran, Deputy Commissioner of Labour Department, Tirunelveli.

Collector Sajjansingh R. Chavan flagged off an awareness rally from Arignar Anna Stadium. The rally passed through Balamore Road, Manimedai junction, Women’s Christian College, Duthie School junction and ended at the office of the Assistant Labour Commisioner at Water Tank road. Over 300 students from various schools participated in the rally.

Earlier, the Collector gave away educational assistance to five meritorious students from tribal community.

Magician Abubakkar rode his bike blind folded in the entire rally. Assistant Commissioner of Labour Gnanasambanthan, Labour Officer M. Lakshminarayanan and Labour Inspector V. Palanisamy participated.
